Hey there, fabulous foodie friends! Have you ever craved a hearty and soul-warming meal to kickstart your day? Well, let me introduce you to a culinary delight that’s a must-try. Today, on “Life with Jeviko,” we’re putting our own spin on an iconic comfort food that’s bound to please your palate any day of the week. That’s right, we’re preparing Sausage Gravy – an indulgent treat that will turn your ordinary breakfast into an extraordinary feast!

Now, you might ask, “Jeviko, what sets this sausage gravy apart from traditional country gravy?” It’s a great question! Both these milk-based wonders are thickened using a flour roux and have a generous sprinkle of black pepper for that addictive kick. The primary distinction, however, lies in the sausage. Unlike country gravy which employs butter in the roux, our delectable sausage gravy utilizes the flavorful fat rendered from the breakfast sausage itself. It’s this meaty richness that transforms a simple gravy into a hearty morning masterpiece.

And here’s a little nugget of culinary wisdom: you can use sausage patties for your gravy! Think about it – just like cooking shows, where we love to see the transformation of simple ingredients into something fantastic. Cook your sausage patties, keep them aside, and use the remaining fat in the pan to build your gravy. Voila, you’ve just elevated your gravy game!

Wondering about ways to customize this delightful recipe to match your palate? Here’s where you can get creative! Experiment with diverse sausage variants like hot, mild, or sweet, infused with apple or maple. Add a sizzling twist by trying out spicy chorizo. Infuse it with aromatic onion or garlic, and don’t forget those earthy dried or fresh herbs. Trust me, with every spoonful, you’ll savor a new depth of flavor!

Let’s jump into the recipe, shall we?

Perfectly Rich Sausage Gravy Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb. of breakfast sausage (Jimmy Dean-style works wonderfully)
  • 1/2 of a large sweet onion, finely diced (optional)
  • 1/3 cup of all-purpose flour
  • 3 1/2 cups of whole milk
  • 1/2 tsp. of seasoned salt
  • 1/2 tsp. of ground black pepper, plus extra for final seasoning
  • 1 tsp. of dried sage or thyme (optional)
  • Salt, as per taste
  • Fresh biscuits, for serving

Instructions:

  1. Begin by tearing the breakfast sausage into small chunks, scattering them across a large pan. If using onion, sprinkle it over the sausage evenly. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the sausage is fully cooked, and the onion becomes tender. This process usually takes around 8 to 10 minutes.
  2. Lower the heat to medium-low and sprinkle the flour over the sausage, ensuring every piece is well coated. Cook for 2 minutes, stirring now and then, to lightly toast the flour.
  3. Gradually pour in the milk, stirring continuously to create a smooth mixture. Crank the heat up to medium-high and bring the mixture to a boil, allowing it to thicken.
  4. Once the mixture is nicely thickened, reduce the heat to medium-low. Now, it’s time to season your gravy with the seasoned salt, black pepper, and sage or thyme if you’re using it. Let it simmer gently for 8 to 10 minutes, stirring from time to time.
  5. Final taste test! Add salt and more pepper as needed to achieve the perfect balance of flavors. Pour this velvety gravy over warm, fluffy biscuits and serve hot.

Note:

  • Choose Your Sausage: Select a breakfast sausage that suits your flavor preference, be it hot, mild, or sweet.
  • Personalize: Don’t shy away from adding extras like onion, garlic, or herbs such as sage or thyme to enhance your gravy’s taste.
  • Utilize Sausage Patties: You can use sausage patties as well. Cook them first, and use the leftover fat to make your gravy.
  • Smooth Gravy: For an ideal consistency, continuously stir your mixture while pouring in the milk.
  • Season to Perfection: Always taste your gravy and adjust the seasoning before simmering and just before serving to ensure a well-balanced flavor.
