If you love sticky barbecue chicken wings, you’re going to fall in love with this slow cooker recipe!
We’re talking tender chicken wings covered in a sweet, smoky, and slightly tangy barbecue sauce that will have everyone reaching for seconds.
And the secret ingredient? Coca-Cola!
I love finding new ways to use simple ingredients to make delicious recipes, and adding cola to barbecue sauce is one of my favorite tricks. The soda brings sweetness and a subtle caramel flavor that pairs perfectly with smoky barbecue sauce.
Combine it with garlic, Worcestershire sauce, and a few seasonings, and you’ve got a seriously delicious sauce for chicken wings!
The best part about this recipe is how easy it is to make. You don’t need to stand over a hot grill, heat a pot of oil, or constantly flip the wings in the oven.
Simply season the wings, add them to the crockpot with the Coca-Cola BBQ sauce, and let the slow cooker do almost all of the work.
After a few hours, the chicken will be tender and packed with flavor.
But there’s one final step that I highly recommend, and it only takes a few minutes!
Once the chicken wings are cooked, transfer them to a baking sheet, brush them with a thickened version of the barbecue sauce, and pop them under the broiler.
This gives the wings a delicious, sticky coating with lightly caramelized edges.
It’s the perfect combination of tender slow cooker chicken and that saucy barbecue finish everyone loves!
These wings are always a great option when you’re planning a party. You can prepare a big batch in advance, finish them right before serving, and put them on a platter with ranch dressing, celery sticks, and plenty of napkins.
They’re also delicious served with macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, or potato salad for a complete barbecue dinner.
Why you’ll love this recipe
There are so many reasons to love these Slow Cooker Coca-Cola BBQ Chicken Wings! They’re easy to prepare, packed with flavor, and perfect for almost any occasion.
- They’re incredibly easy to make. You only need about 15 minutes to prepare the wings and barbecue sauce. After that, the crockpot takes care of most of the cooking. No deep frying or complicated cooking techniques required!
- The Coca-Cola adds delicious flavor. The combination of cola and barbecue sauce creates a wonderful sweet and savory flavor. As the sauce is reduced and thickened, it becomes a rich, sticky glaze that coats every chicken wing.
- The chicken is tender and juicy. Slow cooking allows the wings to cook gently in the flavorful sauce. The meat becomes tender and easy to pull away from the bones.
- They’re perfect for parties. Whether you’re hosting a Super Bowl party, backyard barbecue, birthday celebration, or holiday gathering, these wings make a delicious appetizer that’s easy to prepare for a crowd.
- You can adjust the flavor. Make the wings spicy with hot sauce, extra smoky with smoked paprika, or a little sweeter with honey. This recipe is easy to customize based on your favorite barbecue flavors.
And if you love saucy chicken wings as much as I do, you’ll definitely want to make extra sauce for dipping!
Ingredients
Here I explain the best ingredients for this Slow Cooker Coca-Cola BBQ Chicken Wings recipe, what each one does, and substitution options. For the exact ingredient measurements, see the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
- Chicken wings – you’ll need 3 pounds of chicken wings for this recipe. I recommend purchasing wings that are already separated into drumettes and flats. This makes them easier to arrange in the slow cooker and serve after cooking. You can also purchase whole wings and separate them yourself. Make sure the wings are completely thawed before adding them to the crockpot.
- Coca-Cola – the special ingredient that gives these barbecue wings their delicious sweet flavor! You’ll need one 12-ounce can of regular Coca-Cola. I recommend using regular cola instead of diet soda because the sugar helps create the sticky barbecue glaze. You can substitute another regular cola if needed, but the flavor may be slightly different.
- Barbecue sauce – you’ll need 1 cup of your favorite BBQ sauce. I recommend using a thick, smoky barbecue sauce that isn’t overly sweet, since the Coca-Cola already adds sweetness. A Kansas City-style barbecue sauce works especially well because of its rich tomato flavor. You can also use a spicy or tangy barbecue sauce if you prefer.
- Apple cider vinegar – adds a tangy flavor that balances the sweetness of the cola and barbecue sauce. You’ll need 2 tablespoons. You can substitute white vinegar, although apple cider vinegar has a slightly milder flavor.
- Worcestershire sauce – one of my favorite ingredients for adding rich, savory flavor to barbecue recipes! Just 1 tablespoon gives the sauce more depth and balances the sweetness. You can use soy sauce instead if you don’t have Worcestershire sauce available.
- Garlic – I recommend using 3 cloves of freshly minced garlic for the best flavor. The garlic cooks in the barbecue sauce and adds a wonderful savory taste. You can substitute 1 teaspoon of garlic powder if you prefer.
- Smoked paprika – adds a delicious smoky flavor without using a grill or smoker. I especially love this ingredient in slow cooker barbecue recipes! You can use regular paprika instead, but the finished wings won’t have quite the same smoky flavor.
- Garlic powder – adds even more garlic flavor to the chicken wings. I like combining fresh garlic in the sauce with garlic powder in the seasoning because it gives the chicken plenty of flavor.
- Onion powder – pairs perfectly with the garlic and smoked paprika to create a simple, flavorful seasoning for the chicken.
- Kosher salt – seasons the chicken before cooking. Since barbecue sauce and Worcestershire sauce already contain sodium, I recommend starting with a moderate amount and adjusting the seasoning after cooking if necessary.
- Black pepper – adds a slightly peppery flavor that balances the sweetness of the barbecue sauce.
- Cornstarch – used to thicken the cooking sauce into a glossy barbecue glaze. You’ll need 1 tablespoon mixed with 2 tablespoons of cold water. This simple step makes a big difference in the final texture of the wings!
Optional toppings: Sliced green onions, chopped fresh parsley, or sesame seeds are all delicious garnishes for these sticky barbecue wings.
What are the best chicken wings to use?
For this recipe, I recommend using traditional bone-in chicken wings.
You can purchase whole chicken wings or packages of wings that have already been separated into drumettes and flats.
Drumettes look like small chicken legs. They have one main bone surrounded by tender meat.
Flats are the middle section of the wing. They contain two smaller bones with meat between them.
Both pieces work great in the slow cooker!
I personally like using a combination of drumettes and flats because it gives everyone a choice of their favorite wing pieces.
If you purchase whole wings, you’ll want to separate them before cooking. Use a sharp knife to cut through the joints between the drumette, flat, and wing tip.
Save the wing tips for making chicken stock, or discard them.
I don’t recommend using boneless chicken wings for this exact recipe. Boneless wings are generally made from pieces of chicken breast, and they cook differently than traditional bone-in wings.
For the best results, stick with bone-in wings and make sure they’re fully thawed before starting.
Instructions
I’ve included step-by-step instructions below to make this recipe super easy to follow at home. For the full detailed recipe instructions and exact ingredient quantities, scroll to the recipe card at the bottom of this post.
I recommend using a 6-quart slow cooker for this recipe. This gives the wings enough room to cook in the flavorful barbecue sauce.
Step 1. Prepare the chicken wings
Remove the chicken wings from their packaging and pat them dry with paper towels.
If you’re using whole chicken wings, separate them into drumettes and flats before cooking.
Place the wings in a large mixing bowl.
In a small bowl, combine smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, kosher salt, and black pepper.
Sprinkle the seasoning mixture over the chicken wings.
Use a large spoon or your hands to gently toss the wings until they’re evenly coated in the seasoning.
I like seasoning the chicken before adding the barbecue sauce because it gives the meat plenty of flavor throughout the cooking process.
Step 2. Make the Coca-Cola barbecue sauce
In a medium mixing bowl, combine Coca-Cola, barbecue sauce, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and minced garlic.
Whisk everything together until the barbecue sauce is evenly mixed with the cola.
The mixture will be thinner than traditional barbecue sauce at this point, and that’s exactly what you want!
The chicken wings will cook in this flavorful liquid, then you’ll thicken some of the sauce near the end of cooking.
I love the combination of sweet cola, smoky barbecue sauce, and tangy vinegar.
The Worcestershire sauce and garlic add just enough savory flavor to keep the sauce from tasting overly sweet.
Step 3. Add everything to the slow cooker
Lightly coat the inside of a 6-quart slow cooker with nonstick cooking spray.
Arrange the seasoned chicken wings in the bottom of the crockpot.
It’s okay if some of the wings overlap, but try to arrange them as evenly as possible.
Pour the prepared Coca-Cola barbecue sauce over the chicken wings.
Use a spoon to gently move the wings around, making sure the sauce reaches the pieces near the bottom.
The wings don’t need to be completely submerged in liquid.
As the chicken cooks, it will release additional juices into the barbecue sauce.
Step 4. Slow cook the chicken wings
Place the lid on the slow cooker.
Cook on low for approximately 3-4 hours, or on high for 2-3 hours.
The exact cooking time will depend on the size of the chicken wings and how hot your particular slow cooker runs.
I recommend cooking the wings on low whenever possible.
The gentle cooking process helps the chicken stay juicy while absorbing the flavors of the Coca-Cola barbecue sauce.
After approximately 3 hours on low, check the internal temperature of the thickest part of a few wings.
The chicken should reach at least 165°F before serving. Make sure the thermometer isn’t touching the bone when checking the temperature.
The meat should be tender, but the wings should still hold together when you lift them from the crockpot.
You don’t want them so soft that they fall apart when transferring them to a baking sheet!
Step 5. Make the sticky barbecue glaze
Once the wings are cooked, carefully remove them from the slow cooker using kitchen tongs.
Transfer them to a foil-lined baking sheet and set them aside.
Pour approximately 1½ cups of the cooking liquid into a small saucepan. The sauce has been in contact with raw chicken, so make sure to bring it to a full boil before using it as a glaze.
Place the saucepan on the stove over medium-high heat.
Bring the sauce to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium and simmer for approximately 10-15 minutes.
This allows some of the extra moisture to evaporate and concentrates the delicious barbecue flavor.
In a small bowl, whisk together 1 tablespoon of cornstarch and 2 tablespoons of cold water.
Slowly whisk the cornstarch mixture into the simmering sauce.
Continue cooking for another 2-3 minutes, or until the sauce becomes thick and glossy.
You want the glaze to coat the back of a spoon.
If the sauce becomes too thick, stir in a tablespoon of water at a time until it reaches your preferred consistency.
Step 6. Broil the chicken wings
Turn the oven broiler on to high.
Arrange the cooked chicken wings in a single layer on the foil-lined baking sheet, with the skin side facing up.
Brush the thickened Coca-Cola barbecue glaze generously over the wings.
Place the baking sheet on an oven rack approximately 6-8 inches below the broiler.
Broil for 3-5 minutes, or until the sauce begins to bubble and caramelize around the edges.
Keep a close eye on the wings during this step!
The cola and barbecue sauce contain sugar, which can burn quickly under high heat.
You want the sauce to become sticky and slightly caramelized, without burning.
Remove the baking sheet from the oven once the wings are nicely glazed.
Step 7. Garnish and serve
Transfer the sticky Coca-Cola BBQ chicken wings to a large serving platter.
Brush them with a little extra warm barbecue glaze, if desired.
For garnish, I like adding freshly sliced green onions or chopped parsley.
You can also sprinkle sesame seeds over the top for a little extra texture.
Serve the wings immediately while they’re warm and covered in that delicious, sticky barbecue sauce!
I recommend putting extra glaze in a small bowl on the side for dipping, along with ranch dressing or blue cheese dressing.
And don’t forget the napkins!
Recipe tips
This recipe is really easy to make, but I’ve included a few tips to help you get the best Slow Cooker Coca-Cola BBQ Chicken Wings every time.
Use regular Coca-Cola. The sugar in regular cola helps create the sweet barbecue flavor and sticky glaze. Diet soda doesn’t provide the same caramelization when the sauce is reduced.
Choose a thick barbecue sauce. Since the chicken releases moisture during cooking, I recommend starting with a thick BBQ sauce. A very thin sauce will require more time to reduce into a glaze.
Don’t add extra liquid. A full can of cola, barbecue sauce, and the natural juices from the chicken provide plenty of moisture. There’s no need to add water or chicken broth.
Pat the wings dry before seasoning. Removing excess moisture helps the seasonings cling to the chicken.
Don’t overcook the wings. Chicken wings are smaller than other cuts of chicken and can become overly soft if left in the crockpot too long. Check them near the beginning of the recommended cooking time.
Thicken the sauce separately. I recommend reducing the sauce in a saucepan instead of trying to thicken all of the liquid in the slow cooker. It’s faster and creates a thicker, more flavorful glaze.
Use cornstarch for a sticky finish. A small amount of cornstarch helps the glaze cling to the chicken wings. Always mix it with cold water before adding it to the hot sauce.
Finish the wings under the broiler. Slow cooker wings will have soft skin, so I highly recommend broiling them for a few minutes. This caramelizes the barbecue sauce and gives the outside a better texture.
Watch the broiler carefully. Barbecue sauce contains sugar, and the addition of Coca-Cola makes the glaze even sweeter. The sauce can go from perfectly caramelized to burnt in a short amount of time.
Why add Coca-Cola to barbecue sauce?
Adding Coca-Cola to barbecue sauce is an easy way to create a delicious combination of sweet, tangy, and savory flavors.
Cola contains sugar and flavorings that give it a distinctive caramel-like sweetness.
When combined with smoky barbecue sauce, garlic, and Worcestershire sauce, it creates a flavorful mixture that works especially well with chicken.
As the wings cook, some of the flavors from the sauce season the meat.
After cooking, reducing the sauce in a saucepan concentrates the flavor and helps create a thicker coating.
The sugar in the cola also contributes to the caramelized finish when the wings are placed under the broiler.
That’s why I recommend using regular Coca-Cola instead of diet soda.
The combination is especially delicious with a barbecue sauce that has a smoky or tangy flavor.
If you choose a very sweet barbecue sauce, you can increase the apple cider vinegar slightly to balance the sweetness.
For the best results, taste the glaze after it thickens and adjust the seasoning before brushing it over the wings.
You might be surprised how much flavor you can get from just a few simple ingredients!
How to make the wings extra sticky
If you love chicken wings covered in a thick, glossy barbecue glaze, there are a few things you can do to get that delicious sticky finish.
First, don’t skip the step of reducing the cooking sauce.
The liquid in the slow cooker will be thin because the chicken releases moisture as it cooks.
Pouring some of that sauce into a saucepan and simmering it allows excess liquid to evaporate.
This concentrates the flavor before you thicken it with cornstarch.
Next, make sure the cornstarch mixture is completely smooth before adding it to the hot sauce.
Whisking cornstarch with cold water prevents lumps and helps create an even glaze.
Once the sauce thickens, brush it generously over the cooked chicken wings.
Finally, place the wings under the broiler for a few minutes.
The high heat helps the sugary glaze caramelize and cling to the surface of the chicken.
If you want an even thicker coating, you can apply a second layer of warm glaze after removing the wings from the oven.
I especially love doing this when serving the wings as a party appetizer!
The finished wings will have a glossy barbecue coating with plenty of sweet, smoky flavor in every bite.
Can you make Coca-Cola BBQ chicken wings without broiling?
Yes! You can absolutely serve these wings straight from the slow cooker.
They’ll be tender, juicy, and packed with barbecue flavor.
The main difference is the texture of the skin and sauce.
When chicken wings cook in a crockpot, the moisture inside the slow cooker prevents the skin from becoming crispy.
The wings will have a soft exterior rather than the crispy texture of fried or oven-baked wings.
If you don’t want to turn on the broiler, I recommend thickening the sauce in a saucepan, then returning the cooked wings to the slow cooker.
Gently toss them with the sticky glaze until they’re completely coated.
Serve immediately with extra sauce for dipping.
You can also finish the wings in an air fryer.
Preheat the air fryer to 400°F.
Arrange the fully cooked wings in a single layer and cook for approximately 4-6 minutes, checking frequently.
Brush them with the sticky glaze during the final minute or after air frying to reduce the chance of the sugary sauce burning.
The air fryer is a great option if you’re making a smaller batch and want a slightly firmer exterior.
For serving a large group, though, I recommend using the oven broiler because you can finish more wings at once.
Recipe variations
One of my favorite things about this recipe is how easy it is to change the flavors with just a few extra ingredients.
Here are a few delicious variations to try!
Spicy Coca-Cola BBQ chicken wings
If you love sweet and spicy chicken wings, this variation is for you!
Add 1 tablespoon of your favorite hot sauce to the Coca-Cola barbecue mixture before pouring it over the chicken.
You can also add ¼-½ teaspoon of cayenne pepper to the dry seasoning.
The sweetness of the cola and barbecue sauce helps balance the spicy ingredients.
For even more heat, use a spicy barbecue sauce and garnish the finished wings with thinly sliced jalapenos.
Honey Coca-Cola BBQ wings
Want to make the wings even sweeter and stickier?
Add 2 tablespoons of honey to the sauce while it’s reducing in the saucepan.
Whisk until the honey is completely combined, then continue simmering until the glaze thickens.
The honey gives the sauce a glossy finish and extra sweetness.
Since honey can burn quickly, watch the wings carefully when finishing them under the broiler.
Smoky Coca-Cola chicken wings
If you love smoky barbecue flavor, try increasing the smoked paprika to 2 teaspoons.
You can also choose a barbecue sauce with a strong hickory or mesquite flavor.
For a little extra smoky heat, add ¼ teaspoon of ground chipotle pepper to the dry rub.
This variation is especially delicious served with coleslaw and baked beans.
Garlic Coca-Cola BBQ wings
If you’re a garlic lover, this is the variation for you!
Increase the fresh minced garlic to 5 cloves and add another ½ teaspoon of garlic powder to the seasoning.
You can also stir ½ teaspoon of roasted garlic powder into the glaze while it simmers.
The extra garlic balances the sweetness of the cola and adds a delicious savory flavor.
Pineapple Coca-Cola BBQ wings
For a tropical-inspired variation, replace ¼ cup of the Coca-Cola with pineapple juice.
Add 1 tablespoon of pineapple juice to the sauce while reducing it, if you’d like a stronger pineapple flavor.
The pineapple adds a slightly fruity sweetness that pairs wonderfully with barbecue chicken.
I recommend serving this version with rice and a fresh cucumber salad.

Frequently asked questions
Can you put raw chicken wings in a slow cooker?
Yes! Raw, completely thawed chicken wings can be cooked directly in a slow cooker.
There’s no need to brown or fry them first.
Simply season the wings, place them in the crockpot, and pour the prepared Coca-Cola barbecue sauce over the top.
Cook until the thickest part of the chicken reaches an internal temperature of at least 165°F.
I recommend checking several wings with an instant-read meat thermometer because the pieces may vary in size.
Can you cook frozen wings in a crockpot?
I don’t recommend putting frozen chicken wings directly into the slow cooker.
Frozen chicken can take too long to reach a safe temperature, especially when cooking on the low setting.
Instead, thaw the wings completely in the refrigerator before starting the recipe.
Once thawed, pat them dry, season them, and follow the cooking instructions as written.
How long do chicken wings take in a slow cooker?
For this recipe, chicken wings generally take 3-4 hours on low or 2-3 hours on high.
The exact cooking time will depend on the size of the wings, how many you’re cooking, and how hot your slow cooker runs.
I recommend checking the internal temperature near the beginning of the recommended cooking window.
The wings should reach at least 165°F and be tender, but still hold together when lifted with tongs.
Can you use Pepsi instead of Coca-Cola?
Yes! You can use another regular cola if you don’t have Coca-Cola.
Pepsi or a store-brand regular cola will work, although the flavor of the sauce may be slightly different.
I recommend avoiding diet and zero-sugar varieties if you’re looking for the same sweet, sticky glaze.
The regular sugar in cola helps create the caramelized finish when the sauce is reduced and broiled.
Can you make this recipe with chicken drumsticks?
Absolutely!
Chicken drumsticks are a great option if you want to make this recipe as a main course instead of a party appetizer.
Use approximately 3 pounds of chicken drumsticks and prepare the sauce according to the recipe instructions.
Because drumsticks are larger than wings, they may need additional cooking time.
Start checking after 4 hours on low and continue cooking until they reach at least 165°F and are tender.
Thicken the sauce and finish the drumsticks under the broiler just like the wings.
Can you make these wings ahead of time?
Yes! These wings are a great make-ahead appetizer for parties and gatherings.
You can prepare the dry seasoning and Coca-Cola barbecue sauce the day before.
Store the sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator until you’re ready to cook.
You can also fully cook the wings in advance and refrigerate them.
When you’re ready to serve, reheat the wings until they reach 165°F, prepare or reheat the thickened glaze, then broil briefly until the sauce caramelizes.
This is a great way to save time when preparing several appetizers for a party.
Can you double the recipe?
Yes! You can double this recipe when feeding a crowd.
You’ll need 6 pounds of chicken wings and twice the amount of the sauce and seasonings.
I recommend using a large slow cooker or dividing the recipe between two 6-quart crockpots.
Make sure the chicken doesn’t fill the slow cooker beyond the manufacturer’s recommended capacity.
A larger batch may take longer to cook, so always check the internal temperature before serving.
You may also need to broil the wings in batches to avoid overcrowding the baking sheet.
What to serve with Coca-Cola BBQ chicken wings
These Slow Cooker Coca-Cola BBQ Chicken Wings are delicious served as a party appetizer or as the main course for a barbecue dinner.
Since the wings are sweet, smoky, and covered in a sticky sauce, I love pairing them with creamy, crunchy, or slightly tangy side dishes.
Mac and cheese is one of my favorite dishes to serve with barbecue chicken. The creamy cheddar cheese sauce pairs perfectly with the sweet and smoky flavor of the wings.
Coleslaw is another classic barbecue side. The cool, crunchy cabbage adds a refreshing contrast to the tender, saucy chicken.
Potato salad is always a great choice for summer cookouts. Whether you prefer a creamy mayonnaise-based potato salad or a tangy mustard version, both are delicious with barbecue wings.
Baked beans are another popular BBQ side dish. Their sweet and savory flavor goes wonderfully with the Coca-Cola glaze.
Corn on the cob is perfect for summer gatherings. You can boil, grill, or roast the corn, then serve it with butter and a sprinkle of salt.
French fries are a classic side for chicken wings. I especially love serving these sticky wings with crispy potato wedges or seasoned fries.
If you’re serving the wings as an appetizer, add small bowls of ranch dressing, blue cheese dressing, and extra barbecue sauce for dipping.
Fresh celery sticks, carrot sticks, and cucumber slices are also great options.
For a complete barbecue dinner, I’d serve these wings with creamy mac and cheese, coleslaw, baked beans, and fresh corn on the cob.
Such a delicious combination!
How to store and reheat leftovers
One of the best things about making a big batch of barbecue chicken wings is having leftovers for another meal!
The Coca-Cola BBQ glaze adds so much flavor, and the wings are easy to reheat in the oven or air fryer.
How to store them
Allow the cooked wings to cool slightly, then transfer them to shallow, airtight containers.
Refrigerate within 2 hours of cooking.
Leftover chicken wings will stay good in the refrigerator for 3-4 days when stored properly at 40°F or below.
If you have extra barbecue glaze, store it in a separate airtight container in the refrigerator.
I recommend keeping a little sauce for reheating, since it helps the wings stay moist and flavorful.
How to reheat them
My favorite way to reheat leftover Coca-Cola BBQ chicken wings is in the oven.
Preheat the oven to 350°F.
Arrange the wings in a single layer on a foil-lined baking sheet.
Cover loosely with aluminum foil and bake for approximately 15-20 minutes, or until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F.
Remove the foil and brush the wings with a little extra barbecue glaze.
For a sticky finish, place them under the broiler for another 1-2 minutes, watching carefully to prevent burning.
You can also reheat the wings in an air fryer at 350°F for approximately 5-8 minutes, checking that they’re heated completely through.
Can you freeze Coca-Cola BBQ chicken wings?
Yes! These wings can be frozen after cooking.
Allow the chicken to cool, then place the wings in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
Freeze until firm, then transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or airtight container.
This helps prevent the wings from sticking together in one large clump.
Freeze for up to 3 months for the best quality.
I recommend storing the extra barbecue glaze in a separate freezer-safe container.
When you’re ready to enjoy the wings, thaw them overnight in the refrigerator.
Reheat until the internal temperature reaches 165°F, then brush with warm barbecue glaze before serving.

If you love how easy it is to make these Coca-Cola BBQ chicken wings, there are so many other delicious appetizers you can prepare in your crockpot!
Slow cooker buffalo chicken dip is always a popular party appetizer. Shredded chicken, buffalo sauce, cream cheese, and cheddar cheese come together for a creamy, spicy dip that’s delicious with tortilla chips.
